Treat Iodine Deficiency by Traveling

For the many millions of people living in landlocked countries, iodine deficiency is a common occurrence. Despite the name not sounding very menacing, the lack of this trace mineral can lead to disastrous consequences for your health and well-being. Symptoms can include infertility, fatigue, various thyroid issues, learning disabilities in children and more.

Iodine can be most abundantly found in seaweed, fish and seafood. But besides taking supplements and introducing more fruit of the sea into your diet, another way of bettering your health would be living in an area with iodine-enriched air, somewhere on the coast of a sea or an ocean.

One of the best and most famous coastal cities is New York, located in the North-Eastern part of the United States. Also known as the Big Apple, NY offers a huge range of attractions and sights, as well as the cool fresh air of the Atlantic ocean. First of all, I’d suggest visiting Manhattan and its many tourist hot spots - Central Park, Broadway, 5th Avenue, Times Square, and of course the iconic Empire State Building.

If you are in a mood for adventure be sure to try helicopter tours over the city, and take a ferry to the world-famous Statue of Liberty. New York has a lot to offer in terms of culture as well - you will find many museums, theaters and historical landmarks in every part of the sprawling metropolis.

Feeling like soaking up the sun and really taking in all those oceanic views in a peaceful scenic area? Take a short ride upstate, to a group of villages collectively known as the Hamptons - an upscale resort area full of beautiful beaches, delicious seafood and luxurious hotels. In the Hamptons you can find inner peace and mingle among New York’s upper class.

For the foodie travelers, New York offers an enormous range of cuisines in every price range, as well as an artisan food market in Williamsburg. Don’t miss out on enjoying the unforgettable skyline of the city from Brooklyn Heights, remember the fallen at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, take your time exploring the Metropolitan Museum of art - New York has it all!

In conclusion - while severe iodine deficiency is very rare even for land-locked countries in the modern world, you should take care to enrich your diet with this mineral, and enrich your life experiences with travel to new places. New York is just one of the many coastal cities in the United States you could visit to enjoy salty ocean air, but I strongly suggest you see it now - before the rising sea levels turn it into Venice!
