Kapchagay Reservoir, located in southeastern Kazakhstan, was created in 1970 by damming the Ili River. It's situated about 70 kilometers north of Almaty, in the Almaty region. The reservoir was built to regulate water flow for agriculture, energy production (hydroelectric power station), and to control seasonal flooding.
